The drug was developed by Takeda and reversiblyinhibits the protein proteasome subunit β type-5, which is partof the 20S proteasome complex. Ixazomib citrate (XXIV) ishydrolyzed quickly in vivo to give the biologically activecompound ixazomib, which presumably is the correspondingboronic acid variant of XXIV.
